Me and my friends miss the good old days. I’m speaking on their behalf, but I’m sure they miss it too. The tactile click of spinning your way through your iPod library for hours on end. Long evenings on the sofa watching Friends roll into The Simpsons. Listening to another human without an internal dialogue about the 43 unread emails in your inbox, and how soon you’ll inevitably be “circled back” with.
March 18th, 2025 is exhausting.
There’s too much information, too many options.
Socials, TV, music, internet, gaming, YouTube, streaming. 100% of that lives in your pocket. Even your hand knows it. The second things get slightly less stimulating, your hand automatically reaches for that weapon like a fucking cowboy.
My personal favourite is to open and close 3-4 apps back to back like a madman. An incredible use of my time here on this little rock.
It’s not even like our escapism from the noise of life is quiet. Heavy day? Better get on TikTok to wind down.
DOG / PASTA RECIPE / HAMMER FIGHT / ORCA DESTROYS BOAT / RUSSIA DID SOME SHIT / FREEZE DRIED SWEETS FOR SALE / A BAND YOU USED TO LOVE DOING CRINGE CHALLENGES TO STAY RELEVANT / HOW LONG WOULD IT TAKE THE WHOLE WORLD PISSING TO FILL UP THE GRAND CANYON? (About 800,000 years).
I want to be quiet and bored.
I think we all need to be quiet and bored.
Have you tried going 30 minutes without anything? No phone, tablet, computer, music, TV. Nothing. I’m not even talking about going for a walk. Full monk mode.
It’s uncomfortable at first. But after doing it a few times you get this weird sense of presence.
You notice the weave of the carpet in your room. You realise the old woman living opposite your office is stylish as hell. You accept that you were the one in the wrong. You see the same car five times in a row and question the simulation. You get insights into yourself and your surroundings.
There’s actually a lot of cool shit to think about when you stop thinking.
If you numb out every time you feel something you don’t like, you’ll never feel anything overwhelming or uncomfortable. But overwhelming and uncomfortable is where art is made.
